Woman Hurt in Garage Explosion at Southwest Suburban Home

A garage explosion in southwest suburban Channahon injured one woman and left her and a child homeless Saturday night.

Crews were called to a house in the 24200 block of South Burr Road at 8:45 p.m. for reports of a garage explosion, Channahon Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Jeff Toepper said.

The explosion blew out part of a garage wall, and pieces of the overhead garage door were in the street when crews arrived, Toepper said. There was no fire.

A woman and a child were inside the house at the time and managed to get out on their own, Toepper said.

The woman was transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with non-life threatening injuries and the child refused treatment, according to Toepper.

The explosion compromised the structural integrity of the house and the woman and child were displaced, Toepper said. It was not immediately clear whether any other residents were displaced as a result of the explosion.

The American Red Cross was at the scene to help them find shelter, Toepper said.

The cause of the explosion was not yet known Saturday night.
