Woman Dies After Abortion at Chicago Clinic

Planned Parenthood offered condolences in a statement issued over the weekend

Planned Parenthood of Illinois offered their condolences for a Chicago woman who died after undergoing an abortion at a downtown clinic.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said Tonya Reaves, 24, died Friday after she began to hemorrhage following the procedure at the Planned Parenthood clinic at 18 S. Michigan Ave., according to The Chicago Tribune. It's not clear when the procedure was performed.

The Tribune reports her death was ruled an accident.

Planned Parenthood of Illinois President and CEO Carole Brite issued a statement Sunday.

“While legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies,” Brite said. “Planned Parenthood of Illinois cares deeply about the health and safety of each and every patient.”

Reaves family is demanding answers. Her twin sister told WBBM radio the family is "just trying to figure out what happened."
