Woman Delivers Baby In Hospital Parking Lot

Sometimes close isn't close enough.

Alma Martinez and her boyfriend, Jason Manning, were steps from Advocate Condell Medical Center last week when her baby suddenly became ready to greet the world.

Martinez said she felt the baby coming Thursday morning at the couple's home, so they jumped in their truck and raced to the Libertyville hospital.

As they arrived outside the emergency room, Manning ran inside to get help, but it was too late. The hospital confirmed Martinez delivered her healthy, 7-pound, 9-ounce baby in the truck's front seat in the parking lot.

Martinez and baby Julie made it through the eventful delivery safe, a hospital spokesman said, and the two went home on Friday.

Martinez told the Daily Herald the couple ran into construction on the way to the hospital and she thought she would deliver en route to the delivery room.

Turns out it was much closer than that. By the time an ER physician made it outside, Julie had arrived.
