Woman Charged in Elgin Friend's Murder

Police believe foul play occurred before the fire started

A friend of a badly burned Elgin man is expected to appear in bond court Monday on charges she murdered him.

Jessica Leach, 28, was inside James Granger’s apartment in the Rivers Landing Apartments, 1 Times Square, before a fire around 4:45 a.m. Saturday morning, police said.

A second suspect remains in police custody, according to Elgin Police spokesperson Sue Olafson.

Leach signaled that person to come into Granger’s home to try to rob him, police said.

A fire started in the apartment, though it remains unclear how. Firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish it and found the body of the 61-year-old man, according to the Daily Herald.

“An investigation revealed that the victim was met with foul play prior to the fire,” according to Olafson in a release.

Police said charges are pending against the second suspect but would not be filed for several more days.
