Woman Carjacked at Gunpoint Outside Indiana Department Store

An armed teenager stole a woman’s car at gunpoint from the parking lot of a department store in Hammond, Indiana Monday night.

The carjacking happened around 8 p.m., Hammond Police said, as a woman was sitting in her car outside of the Carson’s in the 6600 block of Indianapolis Boulevard. Someone walked up to her gray colored Mercedes Benz and pointed a gun at her.

Police say the armed teenage suspect told the woman to get out of the car and also ordered the 63-year-old to leave her car keys and purse behind.

Before the carjacking, police said the same teen possibly committed a similar crime in nearby South Holland, where a Chevy Camaro was stolen. Police found that car in the parking lot of the Carson’s.

South Holland Police Chief Greg Baker said the Camaro was taken at about 7:30 p.m. Monday night at a gas station.

Baker said a person a person was sitting in a Marathon gas station off of 162nd Street talking to a friend in another car. Two more cars pulled up and several males got out of one of the vehicles. One of them pulled out a gun and stole the Camaro from the victim.

The victim, the chief said, had OnStar track the car to Hammond and shut it off before a South Holland officer was dispatched to track it down outside the Carson’s store. It was then that police discovered the second carjacking had a matching description.
