Much of that snow that fell Monday is now going to get congealed into a crunch, icy mess as freezing rain comes down over the area in the overnight hours.
A winter weather advisory for metropolitan Chicago issued earlier in the day by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Tuesday morning's temperatures will be around 30 degrees and will rise through midday to about 35.
The snow moved out over Lake Michigan shortly before the 9 p.m. hour. But just as the first storm subsides, another is expected to take it's place.
A second alert warns of a potent Thursday storm expected to dump major snow across the Midwest and Northeast. It could severly affect holiday travel.
Drivers on Monday were urged to use extra caution while driving as reduced visibility and snow covered roads made for a hazardous commute.
"It's not going to be hitting the ground and turning into water right away. It's going to stick and it's going to be immediate snow," said
Streets and Sanitations Commissioner Thomas Byrne.
City officials had 174 snow-fighting trucks out Monday evening patrolling their routes.
Byrne said that because this is a holiday week, trash pickup around the city has to be completed by Friday. The addition of snow will make the job more difficult because the garbage truck drivers are also the snow plow drivers.
