More than 53,000 homes lost power Sunday as high winds swept the Chicago area.
After the wind advisory ended at 8 p.m., ComEd reported 5,400 customers were still without power as of 11 p.m. By 6 a.m. Monday, the utility said 99 percent of power had been restored with 644 customers still without, mostly in the southern region.
Winds continued to gust Monday up to 30 mph as temperatures plunged and highs were expected to reach between 35 and 40 degrees. The National Weather Service warned motorists to use caution as icy spots developed from overnight rain and freezing temperatures.
Snow was predicted in some areas but hasn't accumulated.
Monday night is expected to feel even colder as lows drop to near 20 inland.
Temperatures likely won't recover much this week. Despite plenty of sunshine, NBC Chicago meteorologist Andy Avalos says conditions will remain breezy and quite chilly Tuesday with afternoon highs in the low 40s.
Wednesday highs climb to the mid-40s and Thursday and Friday to the low 50s.
