After a season that saw him get into battles with management and tear up uniforms during a clubhouse tirade, Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale is potentially on the trading block, but one team has reportedly already been told not to bother calling the Sox.

That team is the Chicago Cubs, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. In his rundown of what the White Sox could be looking for in a potential Sale trade, the veteran reporter said that the White Sox told the Cubs “they won’t deal with them” if they end up deciding to ship the ace pitcher out:

“But since this offseason began, perception of the White Sox’s intentions has changed. Some evaluators now believe they will move Sale as Chicago begins a major makeover of its 40-man roster. The White Sox have told the Cubs they won’t deal with them.”

Olney does go on to list several teams that could be on the Sale trade radar, including the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and St. Louis Cardinals, but in spite of having more quality players than positions to play them in, the Cubs apparently aren’t going to be on that list.

The Cubs and White Sox have not made a trade since 2006, when the White Sox traded Neal Cotts to the Cubs in exchange for David Aardsma (the first player listed alphabetically in MLB History) and Carlos Vasquez. There have been only a handful of high-profile trades between the teams, including the deal that sent Sammy Sosa to the Cubs in 1992.
