20 Wounded in Weekend Violence

At least 20 people have been hurt in shootings across the city between Friday night and early Sunday, according to police. As of early Sunday afternoon none of the victims had died from their injuries.

The youngest of the victims, a 14-year-old boy, was standing on the sidewalk in the 12400 block of South Perry at 8:34 p.m. Friday when a shooter walked out from between two houses and opened fire, police said. The boy was shot in the back and leg and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in “stable” condition, police said.

Two other teen boys -- ages 16 and 18 -- are in good condition after a shooting about 11:10 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of West 51st Street, police said. The younger boy was shot in the hand and taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Centers, while the older teen was shot in the leg.

Friday evening’s first shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of North Malden Street, police said. A 21-year-old man was wounded and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in stable condition.

Later in the evening, a roughly three-hour time span saw eight people -- including the teenagers -- wounded in South and Southwest side attacks.

About 10 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the 10600 block of South Perry Avenue and taken to Roseland Community Hospital in stable condition, police said, though the circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear.

Another man man, 36, was shot in a Southwest Side alley. The man was in the 3500 block of West 51st Street at 10:15 p.m. when someone drove past him in an alley, then got out of the car and fired several shots at him, police said. He was shot in the shoulder and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was listed in good condition, police said.

About 15 minutes later, a 21-year-old man was shot in the knee while sitting on a porch in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood, police said. Two male suspects fired at him from across the street in the 6500 block of South Minerva Avenue. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital where he is listed in good condition.

About 11:45 p.m., two men -- ages 21 and 23 -- were shot in a gangway in the 7200 block of South Ridgeway Avenue and taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital, police said.

About 1:45 a.m., a 51-year-old man was shot near the intersection of West Division Street and North Maplewood Avenue, police said.

About 2:30 a.m., a male was shot in the leg in the 8200 block of South Langley Avenue.

About 3:10 a.m., a 38-year-old man was shot in the leg near the intersection of East 56th Street and South Wabash Avenue.

An 18-year-old man was shot Saturday morning in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The shooting occurred at 8:16 a.m. in the 3800 block of West Augusta Boulevard, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. A man in his 20s shot the victim in both legs and then fled southbound through an alley between Avers and Springfield avenues, Perez said. The victim was taken in “stable” condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

A 25-year-old man was shot late Saturday while walking through a gangway in the South Shore neighborhood.

The man was walking through a gangway about 10:20 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Jeffery Boulevard when he heard several gunshots, according to police. He then realized he had been shot in the side. He was taken in stable condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center.

About 10:35 p.m. Saturday a 25-year-old man was seriously wounded in a shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood. The man was walking on East 85th Street, toward South Crandon Avenue, when he saw two males, who engaged him in conversation, Perez said. During this conversation one of the males started shooting, striking the victim in the abdomen. The man ran from the scene and collapsed nearby. Chicago Fire Department paramedics took him from where he fell, to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was in serious condition.

Late Saturday night, a 26-year-old man was shot in the hand and both thighs by two suspects on bicycles in the West Pullman neighborhood. The victim was in the 12400 block of South Emerald Avenue at 11:12 p.m. when the two suspects rode up and opened fire in his direction, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

He was shot three times, once in the hand and once in each thigh, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.

Just before 1 a.m. Sunday a 22-year-old man was critically wounded and a 15-year-old boy also injured, in a shooting in the Englewood neighborhood. They were in a vehicle in the 7200 block of South Emerald Avenue at 12:57 a.m. when an unknown shooter approached and fired several shots, Gaines said. The 22-year-old was shot in the face and taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Gaines said. The 15-year-old boy with him was shot in the arm, and listed in good condition at Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center.

A man was shot and critically injured while walking his dog early Sunday in the Southwest Side Brighton Park neighborhood. The man told police was walking the pet about 2:40 a.m. in the 4300 block of South Homan Avenue when he was shot. The 35-year-old man was shot in the chest and buttocks, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

A 43-year-old man was seriously wounded when he was shot while taking out garbage early Sunday in the West Side Garfield Park neighborhood. The man was in the 3300 block of West Van Buren Street when he heard gunfire at 3:24 a.m. and realized he was shot, Gaines said. He told police he was taking out the garbage at the time, and did not see his attacker, Gaines said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

A 39-year-old man who told police he was shot on the West Side early Sunday was being uncooperative with investigating officers. Police were called on Sunday morning to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the man was being treated for a gunshot to the arm, Perez said. He told officers that about 4:10 a.m. he hard several shots while on the 3000 block of West Roosevelt Road, then felt pain in his arm and realized he’d been shot. The victim was being uncooperative with investigating officers and when police went to where he said he’d been shot they could not find a crime scene, police said. Additionally, according to a source, the victim in the shooting is a convicted felon with gang affiliations.
