Multiple waves of showers and thunderstorms are expected to move into the Chicago area Monday, bringing the threat for severe weather and possibly even tornadoes for some.

The first round of storms, some bringing heavy downpours, will look to move into the Chicago area by the morning and early-afternoon hours.

Behind that system, isolated and scattered thunderstorms could potentially develop during the afternoon from northwest Illinois to part of east central Illinois. Depending on how the storms develop, conditions could become favorable for some to become tornadic from late Monday afternoon through the early evening hours, according to the National Weather Service.

The greatest risk for sever weather is south and west of Chicago.

Temperature highs Monday are set to reach into the low-80s, dropping into the upper-60s overnight.

Life-threatening waves and currents are expected at beaches along Lake Michigan Monday. Beachgoers were advised to stay out of the water as strong rip currents and structural currents were forecast along with waves of up to 3 to 6 feet.

Things look to dry up for most by Tuesday, with the exception of a few lingering showers. Highs are forecast to stay in the upper-70s for the remainder of the week, with a slight warmup expected Friday as the next chance for rain moves in.
