The Center for Care and Discovery, a $700 million, 10-story facility that combines leading-edge technology and innovative research with expert patient care and an emphasis on comfort, will open its doors in February 2013.
Located on the University of Chicago Medicine campus, the Center for Care and Discovery will create a core in which the school's world-class physician-researchers can focus on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Home to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technology and designed to encourage collaboration and the development of new therapies, the Center will enhance the institution’s history of innovation, from development of novel cancer treatments to pioneers in minimally-invasive surgery to advances in medical imaging—all combined with a strong emphasis on compassion and careful communication.
The 1.2 million-square-foot Center for Care and Discovery will do more than set the standard for medical care. With 240 single-occupancy inpatient rooms—each private and spacious enough to accommodate families for overnight stays—it puts patients at the center. Comforts include more space for families and friends; stunning views of the University of Chicago campus, Washington Park, Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline; large flat-screen TVs, window treatments that give patients control, and a unique focus on noise reduction—creating a quiet place to heal. Indeed, the sprawling facility—designed by award-winning architect Rafael Viñoly—will have it all.
