Truck Driver Cited After Dan Ryan Crash, Spill

Southbound lanes at 95th Street closed for about four hours

A Chicago semi-truck driver received several citations after his vehicle collided with another tractor-trailer and a bus Tuesday afternoon and dumped thousands of papers and debris on the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Kenneth J. Dunn, 71, received citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, unsafe equipment and spilling a load on a highway, Illinois State Police said. The driver and vehicle were both placed "out of service."

The southbound lanes of the expressway were closed for about four hours at 95th Street following the three-vehicle crash.

NBC 5 Investigates looked into court records and discovered that Dunn was found guilty of nine traffic violations since 1990, ranging from following too closely to disregarding a stop sign. Dunn also received a ticket in September 1991 for a  truck spilling load violation, but it’s not clear if he was ever found guilty of that charge.

According to preliminary information released by police, the vehicles were traveling south on I-94 Tuesday at about 3:10 p.m. when Dunn's semi-truck lost control, veered off the road and struck the concrete wall.

The impact caused the vehicle's trailer to separate and strike a Thomas Passenger Bus, which collided with another tractor-trailer.

Thirty-eight special needs adults were on the bus traveling from the Pilsen neighborhood to Robbins, and several people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries, police said.
