Severe Weather Knocks Out Power, Downs Trees in Chicago Area

A tornado watch was issued for the Chicago area Wednesday evening.

The watch was issued for Cook, McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane and DuPage counties until 12 a.m. A tornado warning was issued for DeKalb county until 8:45 p.m.

Average delays at O'Hare and Midway airports were less than 15 minutes, but 93 flights had been canceled at O'Hare by 9 p.m.

ComEd reported 12,883 outages in Winnegabo County as well as 693 in Jo Daviess, 432 in Cook and 339 in Stephenson counties.

The highest risk for severe weather sits northwest of the city, according to NBC 5 Meteorologist Andy Avalos.

Counties in far northwest Illinois are under an enhanced or higher risk for severe weather, but northern and western suburbs are under the Slight risk for severe weather which is one step down. Chicago and areas south and southwest remain under the lower Marginal risk, the National Weather Service reports.

Temperature highs will rise into the upper-70s and low-80s on gusty SSW winds between 10 to 20 mph sustained, but gust to 30 or 35 mph.

Scattered showers and storms are also expected later Thursday with the risk for severe storms continuing. Friday could also see another round of heavy rain, though things look to dry up for the weekend ahead.
