Thousands of Vacant Lots to Be Sold for $1 in Chicago

Thousands of vacant lots in Chicago will soon be available for just $1.

More than 4,000 lots on the South, Southwest and West Sides will be sold for a buck as part of the eighth Chicago Large Lots program, which launched in 2015, the mayor’s office said Friday.

The program launched in 2014 in the South Side's Englewood neighborhood and has since sold more than 2,000 lots. The lots have been used to “create new social spaces for family and friends, and to grow flowers and vegetables,” the mayor’s office said.

“Buyers also report more community cohesion, more social interaction and quieter and safer streets through the program,” a press release from the office read.

To qualify, applicants must own property on the same block the lot is for sale. Property owners can purchase up to two parcels of land for $1 each.

The next round to apply for lots begins in early December. More information here
