Thinking About Getting Lash Extensions? 5 Tips From a Pro

Thinking about going long on lash extensions? There are a few things to know first.

We asked Ana Tataru with Chicago-based LashTechPro for lash extension tips. For more answers to your questions, plus tips on lash lifts, head here.

How long do lash extensions last?

Lash extensions last through a full eyelash growth cycle, typically six to eight weeks. However, we don’t lose all of our lashes at the same time so in order to maintain a full look we recommend a fill every 2-4 weeks. Since everyone has a unique hair growth cycle, we will be better able to provide you with our recommendation after assessing your lashes during your appointment.

Will eyelash extensions ruin my natural lashes?

If applied properly, eyelash extensions are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. All of our technicians are licensed estheticians. Our lash techs will select the appropriate extension weight and length to ensure the integrity of your natural lash stays intact. With the right aftercare and proper application technique, the only lash loss you will see will pertain to your natural hair growth cycle. Many people feel that their natural lashes get thinner or shorter after they stop applying lash extensions. In reality, you have been accustomed to waking up every day with thicker, darker, and longer lashes, so understandably, it’s going to be a bit of an adjustment to go back to natural lashes. The application of lash extensions has no chemical effect on the thickness or length of your natural lashes. When there is no longer a need for mechanical lash curlers and waterproof mascara, we actually see a tremendous improvement in previously damaged lashes. We do recommend the use of lash enhancing or vitamin serums to give your lashes a healthy boost in order to support any look you are hoping to achieve with extensions.

Can everyone get eyelash extensions?

Most people are great candidates for lash extensions but there are a few exceptions. If you are going through chemotherapy, battling with an autoimmune disease, are pregnant/nursing or have a history of severe allergic reactions, you should consult with your physician prior to booking an appointment. In order to properly attach the extension, a straight host lash is necessary. If you have very severe bends, your lashes may not be viable for extensions. If you are questioning whether or not your lashes can handle extensions, we would be happy to schedule a complimentary consultation and provide you with our assessment.

How should I prepare for my first visit?

Use an oil- free makeup remover, ensuring your lashes are clean and all eye makeup has been removed. Any traces of oil or makeup create a barrier between the adhesive and your natural lashes and can cause the extensions to shed prematurely. Contacts will be removed before the appointment so bring your glasses if needed. Avoid coffee/caffeine in the hour leading up to your appointment.

Anything I should avoid after my first visit?

Avoid getting your lashes wet for 12-24 hours after application, this includes spray tanning and sweating. Avoid oil-based products and makeup removers around the eye area. Refrain from using make-up wipes on the lashes. Pat your lashes dry after showering and use your spooly to brush them out. Many of our clients don’t feel the need to wear mascara on their lash extensions and while we don’t recommend mascara, always make sure to avoid water-proof if you must apply a coat.
