Thieves Steal More Than $10K in Merchandise in Suburban ‘Smash-and-Grab': Store Owner

Thieves smashed an SUV into a recently opened clothing store in Lansing and stole over $10,000 worth of merchandise, according to police and the store owner.

Video surveillance from retailer Tops and Bottoms located at 16711 Torrence Avenue showed a tan 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer crashing into the business around 4:30 a.m. Monday, the Lansing Police Department said in a press release.

The driver left the Trailblazer and was met by five other men who had pulled up in a white van with black lettering, according to police.

Five of the suspects grabbed an armful of clothing while a driver stayed in the white van, police said. Store owner Anis Kassim said the men left with over 70 pairs of blue jeans that sell for $150 to $200 each.

Kassim also said the thieves were in and out of the store in two minutes. Officers responding to the scene located the Trailblazer, which was unoccupied and running.

The incident was the third time the thieves tried to steal from the store, which opened a month and a half ago, according to Kassim.

The Lansing Police Department is asking for witnesses or people with information about the theft to contact them at 708-895-7150.
