A Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wis., remained an active crime scene as authorities investigate a shooting the killed seven, including the gunman, and wounded several others Sunday morning.
The situation began around 10 a.m. when 911 dispatchers received multiple calls reporting a shooting at the temple located in the southern suburb of Milwaukee, said Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt during a press conference afternoon.
One of the first officers on the scene, a 20-year veteran of the force, was shot multiple times, said Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards. Another officer on the scene then engaged with the active gunman and put him down, Edwards said.
The wounded officer was one of three men taken in critical condition to Froedtert Hospital and underwent surgery, said Edwards. He is expected to fully recover.
Around 4:30 p.m., the death toll from the shooting was seven: three killed outside the temple and four inside, Wentlandt said. One of the deceased found outside is the gunman, he said.
The FBI will handle the criminal investigation and treat it as a "domestic terrorist incident," said Edwards.
Initial reports suggested there were multiple shooters, but tactical units swept the temple complex and no additional shooters where found on site, Edwards said. Authorities are not looking for an additional gunman at this time, he added.
At least four victims were seen covered on the ground outside and 10 to 12 ambulances were on the scene, according to our affiliate NBC station WTMJ.

WTMJ reported authorities closed roads surrounding the temple and set up a staging area just outside.
