A vehicle fatally struck a north suburban teenager Monday in North Chicago after the boy’s vehicle hit a median and he got out to look at the damage.

Emergency crews found multiple accidents when they responded to the 600 and 700 blocks of Skokie Highway in North Chicago just after 10 p.m. Monday, North Chicago police said in a statement.

Roberto Gomez, 17, was driving northbound and hit the center median, police said. When he got out to examine the damage to his vehicle, another northbound vehicle, driven by a 54-year-old Park City man, struck him.

Several other vehicles crashed trying to avoid the accident, police said. Gomez, of Beach Park, was taken to Lake Forest Hospital where he later died.

No charges have been filed, and none of the drivers involved appear to have been impaired, authorities said.

North Chicago police and the Lake County sheriff’s office are investigating.
