Take a Ride on Obama Drive

Calumet Park mayor says the community wanted to be first

Make a right turn onto "Obama Drive."

The Village of Calumet Park voted unanimously Thursday to rename the streets between 127th Street Winchester Avenue and Carpenter Street  after the nation's 44th president, according to the Chicago Tribune.

"I haven't heard of anyone else doing this." said Mayor Joseph DuPar. "We're a little community, but we may be the first out of the gate."

Obama represented the majority African-American suburb while he served in the Illinois Senate, he told the paper.

"We want to stamp his name (on Calumet Park)," DuPar said.

The street signs will be installed August 21, almost three weeks after the president turns 49.

Happy Birthday, Mr. President ... from Calumet Park.
