Suspect Killed, Officers Injured in Shootout in West Garfield Park

A man suspected of shooting a pregnant woman during a domestic disturbance was fatally shot by a Chicago Police officer Sunday night in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.

Officers responded about 11:30 p.m. to a call of the domestic battery in the 4600 block of West Adams, according to a statement from police.

A 24-year-old pregnant woman was found to have been shot in the abdomen and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police and Chicago Fire Department officials said.

The suspect left the scene, but then ran into officers in the first block of North Kenton, where he fired a handgun at the officers before running away, police said. The officers chased the suspect and a perimeter of the area was established.

The suspect was spotted again in a gangway in the 4500 block of West Washington, where he again shot at the officers, police said. The officers returned fire, striking him.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the man, whose exact age was not known, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately provide information on the fatality.

One officer was taken to the hospital with an injury “consistent with a graze wound from a bullet,” Chicago Police Deputy Chief Al Nagode told reporters at the scene. Fire officials said that officer was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening. Nagode added that another officer was also taken to the hospital, but additional details were not released.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said

The officers involved in the shooting will be put on desk duty for 30 days per CPD policy. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the use of force.

The incident marks the fourth time in less than two weeks that someone was shot by a member of the Chicago Police Department.

Early Friday, police said 37-year-old Cleotha Mitchell was shot by an officer in the 600 block of Central Park Avenue in Homan Square, after Mitchell had fatally shot 35-year-old Jeffrey Banks, authorities said.

Early Thursday, a CPD sergeant fatally shot 19-year-old Kajuan Raye in the back in the in the 1400 block of West 65th Street in West Englewood, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. The sergeant said he saw Raye point a gun at him twice during a foot chase. Investigators have not found the weapon the sergeant claimed he saw and Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson on Saturday said he’s relieving the sergeant of his police powers.

Darius Dishaun Jones, 26, was gunned down shortly before midnight Nov. 18 in the 2000 block of West 69th Street in West Englewood, where police officers on patrol saw Jones shooting at another 26-year-old man. Police said officers opened fire after Jones ignored “repeated” orders to drop his weapon. Jones was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Hospital. The man he allegedly shot suffered a wound to the abdomen, and was in critical condition, authorities said.
