Suburban Teen Dies After Collapsing During Basketball Practice

An autopsy revealed he had a previous, undiagnosed cardiac condition, the coroner’s office said

A 13-year-old boy died Wednesday after collapsing during basketball practice in southwest suburban Plainfield.

Dramon Ratcliff, an 8th grader at Kennedy Middle School in Plainfield, collapsed Wednesday night while practicing with a traveling team at Plainfield Central High School, Plainfield Community Consolidated School District spokesman Tom Hernandez said.

The Will County Coroner’s office said the teen, from Bolingbrook, was pronounced dead just before 8:30 p.m. at Presence St. Joe’s Medical Center in Joliet.

An autopsy revealed he had a previous, undiagnosed cardiac condition, the coroner’s office said. The final cause of death, however, was pending further testing.

Hernandez said the basketball team was not affiliated with the district but was using the high school’s gym at the time.

Plainfield police are investigating the incident, officials said.
