A south suburban mayor was charged with punching the umpire in the face at a youth baseball game last month, allegedly breaking his jaw, the Daily Southtown is reporting.
Jay Farquhar, 50, who is the mayor of Monee in Will County, was charged with aggravated battery after an arrest warrant was issued for him on Friday, Charles Pelkie of the Will County state's attorney's office told the Southtown.
Pelkie told the paper the felonies each carry sentences of 2 to 5 years in prison with the possibility of probation.
Regan Freitag, the mayor's attorney, is also a Will County Board member.
Farquhar had previously said he was defending himself when he hit the umpire, 56-year-old Tim Nelson.
According to Nelson, before the altercation, Farquhar called him a drunk when the two disagreed over a call Nelson made at baseball game for 7- and 8-year olds. Farquhar told police it was a joke and he was being sarcastic, the Tribune reported.
Farquhar has been suspended from the Monee Baseball and Softball organization, officials told the Southtown.
