Trooper Injured After Toll Plaza ‘Altercation': State Police

An Illinois State trooper was injured in an “altercation” with an unknown offender at a toll plaza on Interstate 294 in the south suburbs, state police confirmed Monday evening.

The incident occurred at the Halsted Street Toll Plaza #47 in suburban Harvey, state police said, after a trooper observed a "suspicious person." When the trooper approached the suspect, police said the man pointed a gun at the trooper.

The trooper was injured in the neck, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Jason Bradley said, but he was not injured by gunfire. The suspect's gun fired several times while he and the trooper struggled, police said.

A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said, but it is unclear if the suspect is armed.

The trooper is being treated for his injuries, which appear to be non-life-threatening, at a local hospital, police said.

The suspect was described as a black male wearing a construction vest and black jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to call the state police at 630-241-6800 at extension 5028.
