A car full of suspects in the shooting death of wheelchair-bound man, who was gunned down Monday in front of his girlfriend and child Monday, evaded police after a high-speed chase, authorities said.
The paralyzed man, 32, his girlfriend and child were exiting a car in the 4200 block ow West 167th Street about 4:40 p.m An unknown male approached the trio from between parked cars, pushed passed the woman, raised an gun and fired “two to three” shots at the man in the wheelchair. He was struck once in the chest and upper thigh, police said.
Police arrived on the scene shortly after the gunfire and attempted to give the wounded man CPR, authorities said. Other officers chased a car with four suspects in it but lost the vehicle near 152nd Street in Harvey.
The man in the wheelchair was taken to Christ Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He is not being identified until relatives have been notified, police said.
The chase began on I-294 northbound during the peak of rush hour and continued on to the Tri-State Tollway.
Illinois State Police were looking for a black Mercedes.
Witnesses in the parking lot outside Marcus Theaters described the scene where the shooting took place as "shocking."
"We just thought it was the sound effects of the movie," Robert Miranda said.
An investigation was ongoing.
