Springfield Man Accused of Killing Teen Brother Over Shoes

An 18-year-old from Springfield accused of fatally shooting his 17-year-old brother over cash and a dozen pairs of shoes is being held on $2 million bond.

Juan Kincade made his first appearance in Sangamon County Court on Tuesday via video. He faces counts of first-degree murder and theft.

Police accuse him of killing his brother, Juwan Kincade, on Thursday. Authorities say Juwan's mother came home that afternoon and found him dead on the living room floor. The coroner's office says the teen died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities put the value of the shoes and cash at more than $500. They confirmed that the Kincade brothers' father was Juan Kincade, 36, of Springfield. The older Kincade shot and killed himself during an eight-hour standoff with police in March after he took six people hostage at an apartment complex.

The younger Juan Kincade's attorneys have asked the judge to consider a lower bond at a later date.

"Last Thursday, a mother lost her son, and today, the state brought allegations against another son," defense attorney William Vig told The (Springfield) State Journal-Register. "Obviously, it's very early in the case, and we are awaiting receiving the official investigation while we are conducting our own investigation."

The case is next scheduled in court on Aug. 20.
