South Side Priest Beaten During Robbery

Rev. Daniel Mallette awoke to find men standing over him demanding money

A Catholic priest was assaulted during a robbery early Tuesday morning in the rectory of his South Side church, police said.

It happened on the property of St. Margaret of Scotland Church on the 9800 block of South Throop Street in Longwood Manor, where Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart attends services.

"For someone who was just beaten as bad as he was, his spirits are good," said Dart.

Police said Rev. Daniel Mallette woke up around 12:30 a.m. to find two men standing over him, demanding money. When the 80-year-old priest didn’t move quickly enough, they beat him.

The pair eventually found an undisclosed amount of cash in the rectory and ran off, police said.

The pastor was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment. He suffered broken ribs and a swollen face in the beating, but a CT scan revealed no serious damage. He was treated and released.

Police are still investigating.
