Snowfall Causes Dozens of Highway Crashes

As Illinois begins to pick up the pieces after flooding waters tore through Chicago this week, many also began digging their way out of snow.

The recent snowfall and icy roads resulted in dozens of accidents across the city, including a nine-car pileup early Saturday morning.

Two cars slammed into an Illinois Tollway H.E.L.P. truck on Interstate 294 near Central Avenue.

The truck was reportedly blocking lanes to protect vehicles that had already crashed along the road.

“It’s scary,” said Erin Hammond, who was in one of the cars protected by the H.E.L.P. truck. “Had he not been there I mean they could have bounced off the car that was already hit and then slid off to hit us.”

The driver of the H.E.L.P. truck was taken to an area hospital, but no serious injuries were reported, police said.
