Snow Plow Driver Traps Wrong-Way Highway Driver

An Illinois Department of Transportation snow plow driver is being hailed as a hero for helping to apprehend a man driving the wrong way on a Chicago interstate over the weekend.

Ed Piaskecki was driving in the southbound express lanes of Interstate 90/94 -- the Kennedy Expressway -- shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday when he saw a car driving toward in the wrong direction near West Fullerton Avenue.

"A decision had to be made whether to take him out," Piaskecki said.

But the car hit the median and slowed down before reaching the plow.

"He did slow down, luckily, for all of us and for him, because obviously he wouldn't have been too much of a match for the snow plow," Piaskecki said.

Piaskecki boxed the car in with his plow so that the driver couldn't get away.

Gilberto Vanegas was charged with drunk driving, traveling in the wrong direction and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He was bonded out of jail on his own recognizance.

Piaskecki received a call from Gov. Pat Quinn Monday, but he doesn't consider himself a hero.

"I don't think it's anything different than anybody else. I think we all would have done the same thing," Piaskecki said.
