Indiana Slaying Suspect Critical After Carjackings, Chase

Authorities say a northern Indiana man accused of killing his wife, carjacking three vehicles and leading police on a chase in two counties remains hospitalized.

According to NBC affiliate WNDU, 57-year-old Gary Chavez remained in critical condition Sunday at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday.

Fifty-year-old Kimberly Chavez of Portage was found dead at Gary Chavez's Knox home. Investigators haven't said how she died. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Indiana State Police say Chavez left his home Friday afternoon and carjacked three vehicles in Starke and Porter counties before leading officers on a chase ending in Lake County. They say as police closed in on him along Interstate 65 near Crown Point, Chavez shot himself once in the face.
