Woman in Serious Condition, Five Others Injured in Rescue From Chicago River

A woman is in serious condition and five others were injured after rescuing the woman from the Chicago River early Saturday morning.

Firefighters and civilians rescued the woman around 4:15 a.m. near Cermak and Canal, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The woman was about 25 feet from the shore.

Before fire officials arrived on the scene, two civilians jumped into the water to assist in the rescue. One battalion chief and two firefighters in a helicopter later arrived to help.

"One of our battalion chiefs stripped down, jumped into the river, swam out there and brought her back to shore," Battalion Chief Tom Armswald said.

The two firefighters were injured by helicopter debris, according to fire officials. The battalion chief and two civilians were also injured. The nature of their injuries was not known. All were transported to Mercy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The woman was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
