Shedd Aquarium Evacuated After Power Outage

A power outage at the Shedd Aquarium Saturday afternoon shut down the building and caused the building's visitors to be evacuated, officials said.

The power went out around 1:30 p.m. and shut down the entire aquarium for nearly an hour, according to Shedd officials.

The failure was reportedly caused by internal equipment failure, but backup systems ensured the safety of the animals.

“Animal care is our top priority and we have several backup systems to ensure the comfort and safety of our animals. Thank you for your concern!” Shedd officials tweeted.

No animals were injured in the power outage and the aquarium reopened by 4 p.m., officials said
