Severe Storms Expected for Chicago Area Through Monday

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for multiple counties across Illinois and northwest Indiana Sunday ahead of strong storms expected into the evening.

The National Weather Service issued a warning for Fulton, Mason, Tazewell, Iroquois, Ford, Livingston, Logan, Mason, and McLean until 5:15 p.m., with additional Flash Flood Warnings put in place for Will, Iroquois and Kankakee until 5:18 p.m.

The weather service said heavy rain storms had the potential to bring winds up to 70 mph and hail as big as the size of quarters.

Northwest Indiana was expected to be hit with severe weather the hardest, with a Tornado Warning issued for the counties of Porter and Jasper until 5:15 p.m.

The first severe storm system was located just after 3:45 p.m. about 8 miles East of Dwight. At the time it was reported to be moving northeast at about 35 mph.

After an enjoyable and sunny Saturday, the first round of hazardous weather headed into the Chicago area overnight.

Although Sunday was warmer, with a projected high of 81 degrees, periodic thunderstorms began early and are expected to continue throughout the region through the early hours of Monday.

The storms are expected to remain strong and severe, and produce heavy rainfall.

The storms could continue into Monday morning, but the rest of Monday should be mostly sunny with a high near 83 degrees.
