A driver in Indiana distracted by a bug that flew into his semi-trailer crashed on the expressway, causing the expressway close for hours Thursday, state police said.
The 28-year-old truck driver, Christopher Walker, was driving on southbound I-65 about 9:35 a.m. about five miles south of the Lowell exit. A bug flew into Walker’s cabin through his open window and began to try to swat it, according to Indiana State Police. Walker took his eyes off the road while trying to kill the bug, causing him to drive off the expressway and into a guardrail, police said. The semi-trailer then hit a concrete construction barrier wall causing the tractor to detach. The tractor stopped in the middle of the southbound lanes while the trailer went off the road and rolled onto its passenger side.
Impact from the concrete wall split open the trailer, authorities said, spilled 42,000 pounds of plastic rolls over the roadway and embankment.
Traffic was diverted to State Road.
Walker refused medical treatment at the scene and was cited for unsafe lane movement.
