Semi Spills 100 Gallons of Diesel on NW Suburban Highway

A three-vehicle crash Saturday night caused a semi truck to spill 100 gallons of diesel fuel and closed state Route 47 for several hours near the far northwest suburb of Huntley.

State Route 47 between Interstate 90 and Big Timber Road reopened Sunday just after 8:00 a.m. Sunday after it was shut down at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Kane County Sheriff’s police responded to the scene on Route 47 south of I-90 near Huntley after three vehicles were involved in an accident, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

A semi truck, swerving to avoid striking a car, went into a ditch on the east side of Route 47 and came back out onto the west shoulder. A gas tank ruptured on the semi and caused roughly 100 gallons of diesel fuel to leak onto the road, police said.

No one was injured in the crash, according to authorities, but the spill closed down Route 47 between I-90 and Big Timber Road.
