School District Plans Fundraiser Around Ghost Legend

Resurrection Mary 5K to be held in Justice

An suburban school district's annual 5K fundraiser will be a little more spookier next month.

The Indian Springs School District #109 plans to change the name of its Resurrection Run to Resurrection Mary this year in homage to a well-known local ghost legend.

Depending on which version you believe, Mary was a young girl with shoulder-length blonde hair who was killed in a car crash on Archer Avenue in Justice. Over the decades, people have reported seeing her ghost hitchhiking along the road, and some claim to have given her a ride, but she always disappears at Bethania Cemetery.

This year, the race will wind through Archer Avenue and through the cemetery in homage to the legendary tale. Participants will be encouraged to dress the part, or in festive Halloween gear.

The race will be held on Oct. 20.
