SWAT Team Responds to Man Barricaded in a Garage in Calumet Heights

A man fatally shot himself at the end of a standoff early Saturday in the South Side Calumet Heights neighborhood.

A SWAT team was called about 11 p.m. for the call of a person with a gun in the 9400 block of South Escanaba Avenue, Chicago Police said. The man had fired shots outside a home and then barricaded himself inside a garage.

Officers set up a perimeter around the garage and stayed there for hours. Shortly after 2 a.m., the SWAT team entered, police said.

The man pointed a gun at the officers, and then one of the officers shot the man in the abdomen, police said. After he was hit, the man fatally shot himself.

Nobody else was hit by gunfire.

The man had barricaded only himself in the garage, CPD spokesman Rocco Alioto said in a press conference Saturday morning. He didn’t have a hostage.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office hasn’t released details about the death.

The officer who shot the man was placed on 30-day administrative duty, per department rules.
