SIU Faculty Group Sets Nov. 3 Strike Date

The union and the school's administrators have been bargaining since April 2010

A union representing faculty at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale plans to walk off the job in two weeks if a contract settlement isn't reached.

The school's faculty association says its members will strike Nov. 3 unless there's a tentative deal.

The union and the school's administrators have been bargaining since April 2010.

The association says it is focused on academic freedom and tenure issues, as well as the autonomy of faculty members to teach the courses the way they deem appropriate.

SIU Chancellor Rita Cheng says she hopes a deal can be reached within the university's budget constraints.

All four Illinois Education Association-affiliated bargaining units at the school have given their leadership the power to call a strike at any time.
