The southbound lanes on the Dan Ryan Expressway reopened at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday following a three-vehicle crash.
The lanes were blocked Tuesday afternoon after a semi-truck, a bus and another tractor trailer truck collided, dumping thousands of papers and debris along the roadway.
According to Illinois State Police, two tractor trailer trucks collided with a bus carrying developmentally disabled passengers.
Thirty-eight special needs adults were on the bus traveling from the Pilsen neighborhood to Robbins, according to Chicago Fire Department Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.
A red semi-truck lost control and ran off the roadway, striking a concrete wall, which caused the truck's trailer filled with recycled paper to separate and strike the bus, police said.
Officials said the the impact from the trailer caused the bus to veer to the left and strike a white semi-truck, which then hit a concrete median barrier.
It was not clear how many people were injured, but officials said several people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries, police said.
