U.S. Coast Guard rescuers are searching for a man who went missing while swimming Thursday off Whihala Beach near Whiting, Ind., officials said.
Officials were alerted to the area about a half-mile off the coast of Whihala Beach, on the other side of the Hammond Marina, around 3:48 p.m.
The 50-year-old man was reportedly on a bat when he went swimming, but suddenly went missing, officials said. Two others were on the boat at the time of his disappearance.
The Coast Guard, a Hammond Fire Department Boat, a Lake County Sheriff boat and diver, and the Indiana Conservation Police boat were still searching the waters for the man Thursday evening.
