The Chicago Bulls made a splash on the free agent market Sunday, agreeing to a two-year deal with point guard Rajon Rondo, according to multiple reports.
The deal, which was first reported by The Undefeated’s Marc Spears, will pay Rondo $28 million over the two years, and includes a “mutual buyout” option before the second year, according to USA Today’s Sam Amick.
Rondo, who spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Boston Celtics, played the 2015-16 season with the Sacramento Kings. He averaged 11.9 points and 11.7 assists per game with the Kings, and although he often clashed with management, he still had one of the most productive seasons of his career.
The move gets the Bulls to the NBA’s salary cap floor, but it also sets up an interesting competition for the starting point guard spot. The Bulls also have Jose Calderon on their roster, after acquiring the veteran guard in the trade that sent Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks.
