Report Ranks Best Cities for Young Families in Illinois

Lake Zurich topped the list

Lake Zurich has been named the best city in Illinois for young families, according to a new report.

The ranking from NerdWallet released this week highlighted the northwest suburb for its cultural and social opportunities, including community events, a weekly farmers market, the Rock the Block downtown block party and the Lake Zurich Craft Beer Fest. The suburb was also noted for its “exceptional schools,” and abundant nature.

“Lake Zurich is 38 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop, but between the town center, which is right on Lake Zurich, and the adjacent Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve, which offers 782 acres for cycling, cross-country skiing and hiking, it can feel more like the Swiss Alps than suburban Chicago,” the report states.

The report, which looked at 220 places in Illinois with more than 10,000 residents, based its rankings on four key factors including home affordability, prosperity and growth, quality of education and family friendliness.

Following Lake Zurich on the list was Chatham, noted for being an affordable option for families; Cary, called a “haven for young families” thanks to its commuter options and economic development; Minooka, highlighted for its many activity options, despite being the smallest city in the top 10; and Lindenhurst, known for its 19 parks and median home value.

Also named among the top 10 were Oswego, South Elgin, Morton, Western Springs and New Lenox.
