Redbox Rental Prices to Increase

Redbox says debit-card processing fees and operating costs forced the hike

Redbox is raising its $1 movie fee.

The Oakbrook Terrace-based film rental company says debit-card processing fees imposed by an amendment from Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) forced the company to hike per-day rates to $1.20. Pricey movie studio deals also added to the decision.

The increase kicks in Monday, but for those who rent online before heading to the kiosk won't pay the extra 20 cents until Dec. 1 "to make the transition easier," according to a statement.

Prices for Blu-ray ($1.50) and video games ($2) won't change, the company said.

It's Redbox's first increase since the company was founded in 2003.

"This marks our first price change in more than eight years as we work hard to keep prices low for our customers," the company said in a statement.

Last month, Redbox rental rival Netflix Inc. raised prices 60 percent.
