Red Panda Cubs Now on Display at Lincoln Park Zoo

Clark and Addison will be on display by 10 a.m. daily at the Kovler Lion House

Two red panda cubs, Clark and Addison, made their much anticipated debut at Lincoln Park Zoo on Thursday.

Clark, a boy, and Addison, a girl, were born on June 26 and are the first-ever red panda cubs on display at the Kovler Lion House at the zoo.

“We’re excited to see the cubs explore their outdoor exhibit space and to be able to share their playful nature with our guests,” Curator of Mammals Mark Kamhout said. “The red panda cubs continue to grow in size but also in how vocal they are, their activity level and curiosity levels.”

The cubs -- Chicago Cubs namesakes -- made their debut after spending the last few months with their mother, Leafa, in their nest box behind-the-scenes.

“The first months of red panda cubs’ lives are critical for survival,” the zoo’s curator of primates Mark Kamhout said in the release. “Leafa was very protective of her cubs, but curiosity could not keep them in their den and the cubs have spent the law few weeks exploring their behind-the-scenes area from climbing to exploring new sights and smells."

Clark and Addison will be on display by 10 a.m. daily at the Kovler Lion House as they acclimate to their exhibit space.

To raise awareness about red pandas, Lincoln Park Zoo will have, “red panda chats" every morning at 10 a.m. through Nov. 8 to "discuss their vulnerable status as well as unique facts about this species,” the zoo said in a statement.

Red Pandas get their names from their raccoon-like appearance and originate in the Himalayan Mountains. Due to poaching and habitat loss they are considered a vulnerable species.
