Rain and Storms Dampen Start of Summer in Chicago

Scattered showers and thunderstorms dampened nearly all of the first day of summer in the Chicago area and it's not over yet.

With rain already pouring down on much of the area Thursday morning, it was clear summer's beginning would likely be a wash.

Scattered storms capable of producing moderate to heavy rain moved through, though the heaviest rain was expected to fall along and north of Interstate 80.

Flash Flood Watches were in effect for roughly all of north central Illinois through Friday morning and Flood Warnings took effect along area rivers. Flooding closed numerous area roadways and caused backups for many commuters during the morning rush hour.

Several rounds of rain were possible with the storms through the afternoon and again overnight, dropping nearly an inch an hour in some locations.

And it doesn't appear to be ending any time soon.

The Chicago area is in for more rain on the first official day of summer. NBC 5’s Sandra Torres reports from StormChaser5.

Both Friday and Saturday will see the chance for showers and thunderstorms one again.

The storms have the potential to produce localized flash flooding in locations that already received heavy rain Thursday. By Friday morning, additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible.

Things will look to dry up by Sunday, just in time for Chicago's Pride Parade festivities.

And the rain isn't the only story rinsing away summer's kick-off celebration.

Temperatures Thursday stayed in the low- to mid-70s for most, possibly even the 60s along the lakefront.

And that's where they'll likely stay through Saturday, when they'll warm into the upper-70s.

Finally, 80s are set to return on Sunday.
