Purple Hotel Meets the Wrecking Ball

Notorious Lincolnwood hotel built more than 50 years ago

The Purple Hotel's reign is about to end in Lincolnwood.

Demolition of the hotel, located at the intersection of Touhy and Lincoln avenues, began Tuesday morning.

The hotel was bought out of bankruptcy last year and will be replaced with a mix of retail, office, residential and hotel space.

The building has hosted events for more than 50 years, but also has a notorious reputation. Jimmy Hoffa associate Allen Dorfman was murdered in the parking lot in 1983.

Officials say thousands of purple bricks have been saved and will be utilized in the construction of the new development.

The hotel was also the Pritzker family's first Hyatt property in Chicago.
