Puppy Up for Adoption Stolen from Chicago Shelter; Police Search for 3 Juveniles

A puppy was stolen from a Chicago shelter’s adoption center Wednesday and police are searching for three juvenile suspects in connection with the theft.

The female Australian Shepherd-hound mix named Smarties was stolen just before 3:30 p.m. from the Anti-Cruelty Society’s Everyday Adoption Center in South Loop, the rescue said. The puppy is 2 months old and weighs just seven pounds, according to the shelter.

Chicago police said they are searching for three juvenile suspects, one as young as 11 years old, in connection with the incident.

Authorities said two of the suspects distracted an employee while another went to the back of the business and took the dog.

One suspect is described as being 11 or 12 years old, another is believed to be 14 and the third is described as 15 to 16 years old.

Police did not immediately release any surveillance images of the three.

The shelter is asking anyone with information on the dog, which they said does not yet know its name but is microchipped, to call (312) 644-8338 and press 0.
