Popular Halloween Costumes in Chicago This Year, According to Fantasy Costumes

Sales of political masks are down, but the costume purchase frenzy is about to heat up

You might be seeing a lot of creepy clowns for Halloween this year, Chicago.

According to Kathy Bunger, a manager at Fantasy Costumes, one of the most popular getups for this year’s spooky holiday has so far been Pennywise from the movie “It.” That, along with Addams family characters and Purge-inspired outfits.

Meanwhile, Pinterest named the most-searched Halloween costumes for couples and friends this year. Among the options were Lilo & Stitch, Timon and Pumbaa, Woody and Bo Peep, Velma and Daphne, Pulp Fiction and Stranger Things.

But this year is a little out of the norm, Bunger notes.

“It's kind of all over the place this year because nothing major politically,” Bunger said. “It's kind of a little bit of everything - superheroes and gore are popular every year.”

Sales of political masks are down, but the costume purchase frenzy is about to heat up.

With many Halloween parties taking place over the weekend, Fantasy Costumes in Portage Park said it plans to open 24 hours a day beginning Thursday and continuing through Halloween.
