Man Charged in Ukrainian Village Sexual Assault

A man was charged Friday with the sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman waiting at a bus stop in Ukrainian Village earlier this week.

Michael Campbell, 28, of the 1500 block of North Campbell Avenue, was charged with one count of felony aggravated criminal sexual assault, kidnapping and aggravated robbery, police said.

Police said a woman was waiting at a bus shelter at Augusta Boulevard and Western Avenue early Monday morning when a man approached her.

The woman told police the suspect attacked her inside the shelter then dragged her into an area between two buildings where he beat and sexually assaulted her.

Police released surveillance video images of a man they believed raped the woman at the Ukrainian Village bus stop. The man was captured buying items at a gas station across the street before the incident occurred.

A tip was received by the Guardian Angels Thursday morning after a citizen told activists on patrol that they recognized the man in the photos and gave them a name, according to the Guardian Angels. The group forwarded the information to detectives, which led to a person of interest, according to a tweet from the Chicago chapter.

"I'm very happy they caught him," said Manuela Elia, a Ukrainian Village resident. "I feel much safer."
