Police are investigating an "appalling" claim that an Uber driver raped a female passenger he picked up last month.

The woman told police she remembers being picked up by her Uber driver at a bar in River North around 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 16 before being driven to the crossroads of Lawrence and Western Ave., according to reports.

The next thing she knew she said she was inside an unfamiliar apartment and her Uber driver was on top of her.

"This is an appalling and unacceptable incident and first and foremost our thoughts are with the victim and her family,” Uber spokesperson Jennifer Mullin said in a statement to NBC 5. “We immediately removed the driver from the Uber platform when we learned of the incident and are cooperating with the Chicago Police Department in the ongoing investigation. We stand ready to assist them however we can to hold the perpetrator accountable."

This is not the first time a Chicago Uber driver has come under fire. In April, NBC 5 Investigates uncovered a driver was arrested for battery after a passenger accused him of sexual assault.

"Chicago Police have been in contact with the victim, as well as Uber personnel, and we will continue to investigate this incident thoroughly,” said Martin Maloney, the Chicago Police Department’s deputy director of news affairs.
