Fatal Shooting Shuts Down Outbound Stevenson Expressway for Hours

There were reports of a person shot on Interstate 55 southbound at Kedzie

Illinois State Police are investigating a fatal shooting that shut down the outbound Stevenson Expressway for hours Thursday.

A person shot was on Interstate 55 southbound at Kedzie just before noon, according to authorities. Police said officers were responding to reports of a traffic crash at the scene but later determined the driver of the vehicle had been shot.

The 30-year-old man was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was later pronounced dead. He has since been identified as Keyon Berry, of Chicago.

Authorities said preliminary reports indicate the vehicle may have entered I-55 southbound from the California Avenue slip ramp. The Mercedes Benz struck the left concrete median barrier head on at Kedzie Avenue.

The shooting investigation shut down all outbound lanes of the roadway as police canvased the scene for evidence. Traffic was being diverted off the roadway at Damen.

Just before 3:30 p.m., traffic had reopened.

Police are asking for the public's help to determine what happened. Anyone who was in the area of I-55 southbound near Kedzie Avenue or the California Avenue slip ramp between 11:45 and 11:50 a.m., who may have seen the vehicle or the crash, are being asked to call Illinois State Police's Chicago office at (847) 294-4400.
